Maldives is becoming increasingly popular as a surfing destination. The surf season starts in February and ends in November. During this part of the year low pressure areas in the southern part of the Indian Ocean create swells that pump northerly until they break onto the reefs of Maldives. Combined with the offshore tradewinds, conditions cannot get more epic. The breaks in North & South Male Atoll work from March – November. The most southern Atoll works best from February-April. Other months have great days, but wind wise, its less consistent. The swell ranges from 2ft to 8ft. June to September are the months with the biggest swell. It rarely gets bigger than 8 feet. With the water temperature only 3 degrees Celcius below the air temperature it will feel like surfing in a bath.
Plan to bring your regular shortboard and a gun for the potential bigger days. You could also bring a fish or a bigger board for the smaller days. You will definitely need a rashguard, and sun hats and sunblock (high SPF) are recommended as a week in the Maldivian sun has the potential to give your skin a beating. Helmets are optional. Booties are recommended.
You should realize that, especially on the smaller days, the surf breaks in North Male can become crowded, but the predominant epic conditions will make surfing in Maldives an unforgettable experience.
